Skin problems can be very frustrating for a pet owner, as well as for his/her pet. Sometimes, the symptoms can be so severe that the skin may become irritated, sore, and infected. Identifying and treating the underlying problem is the single most important aspect of controlling the itching sensation. In most cases, your veterinarian is capable of treating your pet’s skin problem. However, some skin problems can be chronic and difficult to diagnose. In these cases, your veterinarian may decide to refer you to a veterinary dermatologist.

Many skin diseases look very much alike, having only subtle differences in appearance. A veterinary dermatologist is trained to recognize these differences and pursue a specific diagnostic and therapeutic plan. As specialists, we strive to stay current on newly recognized diseases and therapies.

The following are the types of Dermatology services provided at VRHOH:

  • Intradermal allergy testing and management of allergic dermatitis in the dog and cat
  • Medical management of otitis externa and media, including video-otoscopy
  • Management of resistant infections of the skin and ears
  • Diagnosis and management of autoimmune skin diseases
  • Diagnosis and medical management of some skin cancers
